Once again, Steve Webb is particularly active on this subject and making accusations. We all know he has accused me of fraud but Steve I would like you to list here the names of the 7 other Top Listing birders that you have frequently made mention of in previous altercations with me. And whilst on the subject, many of us know a very famous individual fairly new to the game who is accused of this.
The reason that my Western Palearctic List has not been updated on Netfugl is A) I no longer have my Usernames and Passwords for the site and B) have no way of filling in the individual entries for each species as my notebooks back to 1968 would take forever to go through (however, thanks to Bluebird Technology, I now have an excellent programme allowing me to very slowly upload all of my records and work lists out automatically).
Chris Bell is now back in first place on the WP Listing replacing me this year.
As all of the Top Listing Birders in Britain are fully aware, I have a Master Spreadsheet detailing all of the respective lists which I try and keep as updated as possible. I also have an additional team of ”checkers” who are able to pick up on mistakes and make valuable comments, etc.
In the event of an unsubmitted list, this is clearly marked with an asterisk.
I have previously discussed the possibility of publishing the Master List but this has been vehemently opposed by many – many of those that have submitted their Life Lists do not want to publish chapter and verse on their individual sightings. I have to respect that.
When we get into the realms of the subject of ”cheating”, very few birders purposefully cheat – probably less than 3%. The grey area is optimistic counting and an unhealthy level of incompetence – this takes the level to around 13%. A classic example of this was the Grey Catbird at South Stack RSPB on Anglesey. This bird was certainly present for two days but then disappeared overnight. Sadly, many people claimed it out of desperation on the third day, and remarkably, without even re-circulating the record, BBRC extended it to an additional date on the back of a single observer submission for a third date. This is not an isolated case – there have been many examples of this.
There are also many attempts at cover-ups that I have unearthed and by this, I mean rare birds that have been claimed as something and then somebody gets along and checks it out within the hour and find that it is a different rarity species. One record then becomes two because the finder of the first rarity is not prepared to own up that a mistake has been made. Many such records are accepted – this situation arising in Shetland and Scilly in particular over the years.
Also, during extensive investigations, the last 7 years of internet birding has seen a large increase in photographic fraud. Only very recently, it was realised that one Shetland garden lister was using photographs taken on Fair Isle two years ago to justify 2010 birds. Again, not an isolated case, but happening more and more, particularly whereby birders are travelling far and wide around the World and photographing interesting birds in interesting situations. Many photographs and videos are actually manipulated too – one bird on the BOURC/BBRC list never actually having occurred in the Western Palearctic let alone Britain.
I have touted the idea of having a proper Committee to oversee listing ethics and paraphanelia on several occasions (other than me being sole judge, jury & executioner) but nobody wants to serve on it publicly because of the real nastiness it entails. It really is a thorny issue and, as I have frequently found, it gets really, really unsavoury. There is no easy way around it, and, as many have already mentioned, birding is a hobby rather than a sport and most people just want to go out and have a good day and enjoy some great birds. The politics are the nasty side of the hobby and hence I prefer to keep it away from the fore and deal with it on the side.
